We had a really nice day today. The kids and I all went to the grocery store after I strategized my coupons. We were able to get free milk with our cereals and free Kleenex when we bought four Kleenex. Someone had cleared out the shelves of some of the cheap cereals I really wanted to get. I was disappointed about that and disappointed that none of the low-sugar, healthier(?) cereals were included in the sale, but the kids were quite happy with the selection we got. I am teaching them to be very careful in checking the tags to make sure that they are on the sale we want, that they are the right price, and that our coupons match up with the items we buy. We got to chat with a couple ladies from our church which is always fun as well. When we came out, I checked the receipt and we had saved 43% on our bill by using coupons and shopping the sales. Woohoo!
It was a beautiful day and we had the missionaries over for dinner with homemade pizza, pear and blue cheese salad, carrot sticks, cucumbers, and hummus with apple and peach pies for dessert. Happy pi day! The kids are loving that it is warm enough to go out on our swing set.
Religion - Um, oops, we forgot to do it. It would have been review from the past week and our scripture memorization. I just spaced it.
Math - Turtle did his Funnix Math and the other kids did their Xtramath. Racer is at 92 now with his division and Chicklette has improved from 47 to 57 so they are both doing well.

Physics - Racer really wanted to work on his newspaper stool again today even though I told him that we would be working on it next week as well. He finally got a structure that he is happy with and that will (somewhat) support him. He used up the rest of the masking tape so we will need to get some more the next time we are at the Dollar Store or an office supply place. Here's a close up of just the stool.
Daily 6-trait Writing - I finished up our week of "Putting things in order" by having Racer write a paragraph on how to make a Pinewood Derby car. (Our Pinewood Derby comes up in a couple weeks.) He had a couple misspellings and one awkward sentence, but other than that it was a pretty well done paragraph. And there was hardly any whining. He did really well at using a variety of sequence words as well so it was more interesting to read than just - "First. . .Second. . .Third. . ."
Spelling - The kids both had a spelling test today and both got A+'s on them. Chicklette was very excited. Racer was a bit more blase, but still pleased.
History - We quickly finished up Nevada and put a bunch of animals on our boards since we found some more stickies. We enjoyed talking about the Hoover Dam because we've been there a few times as a family and because it was just featured on our America: The Story of US DVD. After we finished up Nevada, we read about Lyndon B. Johnson. We talked a little bit more about Vietnam and the effect it had on Johnson's presidency and we also discussed segregation and the Civil Rights Act. I really enjoyed learning a little bit more about this president and I love the Mike Venezia books about the presidents.

Grammar - Racer and I did his grammar today and we practiced writing direct quotations. Chicklette and I didn't get to hers.
Ballet - Chicklette got off to ballet again today. She always says she hates going. I think she really hates interrupting her day and her free time after school and I know she hates getting her hair done. I think she actually enjoys the dancing though because she always comes home happy. Well, I've promised her that she won't have to do it next year so we'll see how she feels next year when she's not doing it.
