Monday, Monday. The kids have been doing great so far this year with keeping a good attitude and being willing to work. Maybe I am finally doing a good job with determining how much work they need or maybe it's just the beginning of the year.
Racer finished his piano practice and we moved on to open our school day with religion. We began with our scripture memorization and tomorrow we will start a new scripture. We made a little booklet about Hyrum and Joseph's friendship and about the operation on Joseph's leg. Chicklette didn't quite finish her pictures so we will work on it tomorrow also.
Math - Racer finished his math in 15 minutes and got them all correct. Chicklette took an hour and still didn't finish so she had to finish it after school for homework. Racer thinks rounding is very easy and today we did rounding to the hundreds place. Chicklette was focused on place value up to the hundreds place. I'm thinking our review on Friday will be more of the same because she would have a problem like 200 + 50 + 4 and she would come out with 200504, which is not quite correct, as you can see.
Science - We looked at the composition of air today and talked about some other gases. We talked about nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and some of the noble gases - argon, helium, xenon and neon. Racer had extra time during his handwriting period since he was so speedy in math and he took that time to look up the links in the Usborne Science Encyclopedia.
Spelling - Chicklette went first in her spelling. She got all her words from last week correct but had some letter reversal issues. Chicklette was working on beginning blends. Racer practiced when to use tch and when to use ch in spelling words. He missed three so we will continue working on those.
History - We were finally able to start history because I got the book that we are reading out of. The library got Leif the Lucky for me and we read pages 1-20. After we read, I had both Racer and Chicklette draw a picture of something that happened in the book. Chicklette drew a picture of Leif going to hunt seals. Racer drew Leif Ericson in a boat going to visit the kind of Norway. I introduced the geography program that we are using. We will be using Road Trip USA, courtesy of Confessions of a Homeschooler. We looked at the different regions in the United States and discussed the compass rose.
Latin - For Latin we watched lesson 2 on our DVD. Miss Leigh explained the consonant sounds in the Latin alphabet to us and we practiced our new vocabulary words. Tomorrow we will do flashcards.
Language Arts - We finished off our day by doing our grammar and Writing with Ease. Chicklette and I discussed proper nouns in both programs and she did a copywork sentence. Racer narrated the main theme of his reading selection to me.
I've been very pleased with how well the kids are working. I'm still getting time with Turtle to do a reading lesson. We usually have time to do some activities from our Letter of the Week curriculum (also Confessions of a Homeschooler) as well and Sunshine joins in occasionally.
