I know, I know. I've been slacking. Well, kind of. I have done a stripped down version of school this week while we processed about 4 bushels of apples.
Things we learned this week -
In terms of school, the kids did a lot of independent work. They were able to do their math and Xtramath. We could do religion although we didn't do much memorization this week. They mostly kept up on their piano practice. Racer was able to do science on his own even though he hated it. Latin did get done, we will just do our flashcards tomorrow. I had Racer do a reading lesson with Turtle one day and I did one with him today. I asked Turtle today if it was going to be a good reading day or a bad reading day. He starts giggling and burst out with, "It's going to be a terrible day today!" Oh, boy.
Things we slacked on - History, Grammar, Writing with Ease, Spelling. Those things require a lot of teacher involvement so they didn't get done. Some of it we will make up tomorrow. I'm thinking history for sure and maybe spelling. I'm thinking that with Grammar and Writing with Ease we will just skip this week and do them next week.
Racer made it to his soccer practices, games and Lego club also. We went to the new Lego store that opened near us and Racer has worn the shirt he got there for two days this week. We also went to a couple D.I.'s looking for canning jars. We didn't find much but we found a gorgeous costume for Chicklette for $10 and a really cute bumblebee costume for Sunshine for $4. He loves it and has worn it off and on every day since. We switched the Bubbers to new carseats. It's kind of tough to get one of them into the van since I have to put him in through the back, but it's about the best situation we could come up with.
Next week we will be much more on top of things.
- Do not reach over the top of the water bath canning pot if you are not tall enough to see over it. Even if you think the house is going to burn down because a lot of water is coming out of the pot. You can give yourself second degree burns and some pain and agony.
- Don't play around with the crank on the saucer and turn too vigorously because you may just tip over the whole machine and have to pick apple peels off the floor.
- Do not overfill the jars and do wipe the jars down after they have processed.
- Applesauce tastes best when it is just coming out of the food mill and is still warm. It is also hot enough to singe your fingers if you are trying to get your brother's little spoon that he dropped into the pan where the applesauce is coming down.
