Today DH (hmm, I'll have to come up with a nickname for him), Racer and I were asked to speak in church. Okay, well we weren't asked today but we did talk today. For those who are not LDS, the speakers for the week are taken from the congregation with the topic generally suggested or assigned by the bishopric. Occasionally we have speakers from other congregations. Those speakers are called high councilors and are selected by the stake presidency. The stake presidency is over several congregations.
Anyways, the councilor who called us asked us to speak on the keys of the priesthood. I avoided doing much with the topic all week. I'm not sure why; it's not like the councilor would have called us back later and said, "Never mind, we don't really want to hear from you." And I'm sure if he had, I would have been surprised. Well, I do kind of know what I procrastinated. I just wasn't totally sure what the keys of the priesthood were and in my general knowledge about them, what I would say. Saturday after I had finished canning for the day, I sat down and was looking for some info about what to say and Sunday I figured I had better buckle down and do it since I was going to talk in 5 hours. I finally came up with some things to say. I had a personal experience, some quotes, and a general structure. I didn't feel great about it, but I felt okay. I figured DH would be a better and longer speaker and anything I didn't cover, he would.
I got up to speak when it was my turn, the Bubbers were quiet and my row was as quiet as it usually gets with several under 8. The talk went okay, but I just felt incomplete. During DH talk, I had to take Sunshine to the bathroom, but it seemed like his talk went okay also. When he finished, we still had 10-15 minutes of the meeting left. Well, dang. The bishop stood up though and said that he had wanted to talk about girls camp anyways. After the bishop was done, one of our stake presidency who was in attendance, got up and completed our talks. In all our defining of priesthood keys, we had both forgotten the most important part of them. We have priesthood keys in order to perform ordinances in church and one of the most important ordinances that we can perform is sealing families together. We want to be able to live with our families for eternity and without the priesthood and the authority of God on earth, we would not be able to.
Although I do not understand all of the roles of the priesthood and I have a hard time with personal revelation for myself, I am grateful for the ordinances we are able to perform. I am grateful that we have a path back to our Heavenly Father. I am grateful for a Savior. I am grateful for the sealing power that I can live with my family for eternity. I am grateful for the ordinance of baptism and the ability to take the sacrament. I am grateful to be allowed to continually improve myself.
